Bonding/tooth colored filings involve the application of a composite resin to restore the existing tooth. We use bonding in the majority of cases when fillings are needed, and as a conservative method of covering stains and defects. Bonding can also be used to close spaces between teeth, or alter the length and shape of a tooth in order to make it more cosmetically pleasing.
One of the most exciting techniques in cosmetic dentistry today is porcelain veneers. A porcelain veneer involves bonding a thin porcelain laminate to the enamel surface of the tooth. Because it involves a minimal preparation into the tooth surface, the majority of the existing tooth structure is preserved. A porcelain veneer allows us to change the color and shape of the restored tooth, while providing long lasting durability.
Porcelain crowns are similar to porcelain veneers, however, they require more preparation of the existing teeth. They are used in cases where the supporting teeth are weakened, malpositioned, or require extensive reshaping. They can also be used to restore function and/or correct aesthetic alignment. Placing crowns and veneers are more involved and time consuming options compared to other solutions, however, they produce beautiful, long lasting results.
